Advice for Oral Surgery in Carlsbad

Before Intravenous Sedation

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight hours prior to the appointment.
  • No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery. Six weeks of no smoking give optimal results.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain there during the procedure, and drive the patient home.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
  • Please wear a short-sleeve button-down shirt or blouse.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, lip balm, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach upset, or upset bowels, please notify the office.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Tracy prior to your surgical date for instructions.

Should I be nervous about IV sedation?

It is completely normal to feel apprehensive about IV sedation, but it is standard practice in oral surgery and routine for millions of patients every year.

Rather than putting you completely to sleep like general hospital anesthesia, IV sedation puts you in a state of deep relaxation often referred to as "twilight sleep." You remain able to breathe on your own and respond to simple prompts, but you will feel entirely comfortable and typically have no memory of the procedure once it is finished.
